Every unit, individually
For anything sold by the piece and carrying its own number — phones, laptops, televisions, appliances — the item code is not enough. The shop needs to know which specific unit went to which customer, and on what date, because warranty and returns both depend on it.

A customer comes back with a handset eight months later. Was it bought here? When? Is it still in warranty? Without the serial recorded against the sale, answering that means going through bill books, and the answer you eventually reach is one the customer can argue with.
With the number captured at purchase and again at sale, the question takes a scan. It also makes stock counts real: for goods this valuable, knowing you hold eleven is much less useful than knowing which eleven.
From goods inward to warranty claim
Captured on the way in
Serial numbers or IMEIs are scanned as goods are received, against the purchase and the supplier. Duplicates are refused, so the same unit cannot exist twice in your stock.
Captured on the way out
The unit is scanned at billing, tying that individual item to that customer and that date. The number can print on the invoice where the customer needs it.
Warranty from the sale date
Warranty period is held on the item and counted from the actual sale, so the answer to "is this still covered" is looked up rather than argued about.
Returns and replacements that stay straight
A unit returned goes back into stock as itself; a replacement issued is recorded as a different unit. The trail stays intact instead of being patched with a note.

Can I look a unit up by its number?
Yes. Enter or scan the serial or IMEI and you get its whole history: which purchase it came in on, which supplier, which bill it went out on, and to whom.
What about items where only some units have serials?
Serial tracking is set per item, so accessories and consumables are billed normally while the goods that need tracking get it.
Does this work for anything other than phones?
Anything with a unique number. We have customers using it for appliances, laptops, power tools and machinery as well as handsets.
